Private Health Sector Intern
The USAID/Liberia Health Office is the largest office in the Mission, managing approximately $46M per year in maternal/child health, family planning, malaria, water and HIV funding. The 17-person office manages a complex and diverse portfolio and is in the process of significantly expanding its work with the private sector, in close coordination with the Economic Growth Office. The private sector activities, and broader health systems strengthening activities, are managed by a Health Systems Team in which this position would be located.
The Private Health Sector Intern (Intern) will assist with strategic, technical, project management, and program/administrative aspects of the USAID/Liberia private sector. S/he will support the strengthening of critical links between Health Office programs and private sector stakeholders as well as between Health and Economic Growth teams. S/he will have the opportunity to help develop private sector relationships that address key health challenges, as well as guide the private sector portfolio of the Health Office to achieve greater health outcomes.
The Intern will work closely with the Health and Economic Growth Offices and receive technical guidance from the Health Systems Strengthening Team Lead, who will serve as his/her onsite manager.
By the end of the internship, the Intern will have helped develop a private sector landscape assessment as well as the formation of a Liberia Healthcare Federation of private providers and stakeholders to improve efficiency, quality and access to private care.
The Private Health Sector Intern will:
• Research and develop private sector partners.
• Work with USAID and implementing partners to cultivate private sector relationships and bridge gaps between USAID private sector and public sector investments.
• Support the start-up of USAID’s new health systems strengthening activity
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*required 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
• Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
• Gain exposure to private sector and health systems strengthening activities through global health programming.
• Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
• Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
• Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
• Experience in public health and/or private sector development programs.
• Proven interpersonal communication skills in settings with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to analyze data and distill and present key concepts for a wide range of audiences.
• Fluent, strong English writing and presentations skills.
• Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks.
• Liberian citizenship required.
